We've won and lost, said hello and said goodbye and generally sweated quite a lot! We've also had the chance to play the biggest show of our lives so far which was an amazing experience.

First of all though we have to say a heartfelt goodbye to our long-standing guitarist Richard Berner, who has unfortunately decided he can't carry on in a word like.attack. There are no hard feelings though and we wish him all the best for the future. (You can still catch him playing around Southampton in The Common).

The upside to this is that we have enlisted the talents of Dan Fisher from The Taming to fill in and we're really looking forward to writing some new music with him. We played our first show with him on Sunday 21st March in Winchester and it was a whole heap fun. Here's to the future.

Talking of fun, we also got the chance to play 600 people at the Garage in London on 15th March. Was it a big deal? Yeah just a bit.

Were we over the moon to be there? Definitely. Were we shitting ourselves? Completely and utterly.

Said gig was supporting Australian prog rockers Karnivool on the London date of their UK tour (we were also lucky enough to support them on their Southampton date too) and it was definitely the best live experience any of us have ever had. Playing with such a professional, friendly and down to earth bunch of guys was really refreshing and we only wish we could of done more with them! The pictures you see before you are from this show and come courtesy of James Laidlaw. We're at the Joiners, Southampton on Sunday 14th March and at the Relentless Garage, London on Monday the 15th.

Needless to say these are two insanely big shows for us, in fact I'm pretty sure the Garage will be the biggest venue we've played so far, and definitely the biggest crowd, so we're pretty excited (and possibly nervous). Anyway, tickets for the Joiners are available from us and, while the London show is apparently quite close to selling out, there are still a couple of tickets available here.

There is also a Facebook Event for the Southampton date, and normally this would be the part where I'd include the poster for at least one of the shows, but unfortunately there isn't an official poster. The drive from Hull to Southampton is a long one and quite why, having it done it before, we decided to undertake it a second time I'm not too sure, but rest assured it took ages and involved nearly every sort of weather you might expect to see in the UK. It was sunny in Hull, snowing heavily in the midlands, raining for a large part of the way, and finally, it was night time and we were home.

And that my friends is what really happened. This involved a strange discovery; we were playing a free show downstairs with a Metallica-style metal band (there was meant to be another band downstairs as well but they phoned up at around half 6 and pulled out - how we end up on these shows I'm not sure) while upstairs, 5 hardcore/post-hardcore bands had put on a gig with £2 entry. As a result of this, I kind of got the feeling that the majority of the people inferred that 'the real gig' was upstairs while we, downstairs, were some kind of wildly inappropriate in-house band. There was a degree of wailing and gnashing of teeth at this, (by this all I really mean is that we asked if we could play upstairs instead and got turned down) but this is quite a standard awl.a experience in a way, all our gigs seem to be a bit weird, so we dealt with it like the men we are, slunk back downstairs, played our very best and in the end quite enjoyed it. In some ways the other gig worked in our favour, it certainly meant a lot of people saw our set, or at least bits of it, that they might not have otherwise, and it gave us a lot more people to flyer at the end of the night.

Once the gig(s) had reached a conclusion, we headed out on the town, to a club called the Welly for their weekly alternative night, and from there things went very, very downhill. Really downhill. £1.90-for-a-double-vodka-and-redbull downhill.

Final tour blog will be up tomorrow.

Joe
awl.a

Potay-Tour - Part 3 (Wednesday)

Wednesday 17th February - Bakers Vault, Stockport

On Wednesday, we rose early (we didn't) and made our slow, painstaking way up the country to Stockport. Not sure how the journey ended up taking 6 hours, but it did, and as we crawled past Birmingham once again, we felt a bit foolish, but that's how things are for a band like ours, you play the gigs when and where you're given them. Finally however the Bakers Vault in Stockport loomed on the horizon and on arrival we met possibly the nicest promoter in the world. He greeted us with sandwiches and for that, we thank him. In contrast to the night before we seemed to have landed ourselves on a largely pop-punk bill, with pretty good attendance, and an enthusiastic crowd. The bands and staff were welcoming and the promoter again proved himself a true hero when, as the drummer in the headline band (Lights Out Action), he lent us a snare since Alex had managed to punch a hole through his in the first song. Thank you Stockport, we hope to see you again soon.

After the show we drove to Hull (via another ASDA), along dark and snowy mountain passes (for some reason the GPS was stuck on 'avoid motorways' for the first half of the journey!) vaguely reminiscent of that bit in Lord of the Rings. Emotional driving aside however, we finally arrived in Hull and crawled into bed, looking forward to the day ahead and a true rarity: a lie-in.

Joe

awl.a

Potay-Tour - Part 2 (Tuesday)

Tuesday 16th - Hope and Anchor, London

Tuesday we played the Hope and Anchor in Islington, in London. Needless to say, driving in London is absolutely horrendous, a true test of a man's grit, skill and determination. But surprisingly we safely skirted all obstacles in our path, at no point entered the congestion charge zone, had an excellent meal in a pub somewhere in Angel and were on time to sound check.

I will definitely say that the Hope and Anchor is a really nice venue, the sound is excellent and the soundman really knows what he's doing. However, we were on the wrong bill. The opening band were a blues rock trio fronted by a singer with an acoustic guitar, this was followed by us, and the night was headlined by an indie hip-hop five-piece. On the one hand it could be said that this meant the night featured an eclectic mix of bands playing a variety of different styles, in a something-for-everyone kind of way.

Alternatively a more cynical soul could suggest that the promoters had decided that the easiest way to ensure maximum attendance was to put on three entirely different bands that would hopefully bring three entirely different crowds, guaranteeing that the maximum number of people could be charged entry. This might be an unfair assessment; I'm not a promoter, nor do I think I'd be a particularly good one, but I always thought the more accepted method of putting together a bill was to book a coherent line-up, in which the crowd for each band will find something to enjoy or relate to in the remainder of the bill. I totally understand that promoters have to make money to make a living, and there are admittedly plenty of other explanations; perhaps they didn't have enough faith in any particular style of music or the quality of the bands to put on a whole night of it, or maybe it was a simple misunderstanding and they thought the line-up would, as a whole, work well. I'm not saying that I know better, but a lot of promoters seem to do this and the general consensus seems to be to give them the benefit of the doubt, but in this case I felt that something wasn't quite right.

My point of view is this: playing gigs, while hugely enjoyable and worthwhile, is something that an aspiring band does to help with exposure, because you want people to hear your music. However the responsibility of pushing a band in the right direction to a crowd that will enjoy it, or at least appreciate roughly what a band is aiming for, lies with the promoter and for us, a crowd there to see an indie hip-hop band is not the kind of demographic that's going to get on board with what we're trying to do. For a promoter to book us, offer us a guarantee that won't totally cover petrol, which means that we have to rely on merch sales to get where we're going, stipulate that we have to bring people in order to get that guarantee and then put us on a bill that we're entirely unsuited to seems, at the very least, somewhat unhelpful.

(I should clarify, the views expressed in the above two paragraphs are my own and not necessarily those of 'a word like.attack'. I may not be right either, and this may not even be the right forum in which to air these kinds of views, but it's how I feel so thank you for indulging me.)
Having said all that, these things happen and that's ok. We really enjoyed ourselves, it was the nicest venue we played all tour, and the people who did watch us seemed to enjoy it too. The other bands were kind enough to stick around, and we got to meet 2000FastWomen, the previously mentioned indie hip-hop band, who were fantastic musicians and friendly guys.

After the show we packed up, paid an unbelievable amount for parking, located yet another floor to sleep on, made some mighty fine pancakes (it was Shrove Tuesday after all!) and lapsed into unconsciousness.

Joe
awl.a

Potay-Tour - Part 1 (Monday)

Southampton, Birmingham, London, Stockport, Hull, Southampton

Not the longest drive any band has ever attempted I'll give you that, but it's the drive we did Monday to Friday last week, because those are the cities in which we managed to book consecutive shows. We played some good shows, and some bad ones, met some really nice people and got to drive in a variety of conditions and, in covering roughly 819 miles (excluding the getting lost every time we tried to find a venue), did a great deal to enhance the size of our collective carbon footprint. Over the next couple of days we'll be publishing blogs of what happened on various days, occasionally accompanied by photos of a questionable quality.

Monday 15th Febuary - Subside Bar, Birmingham

On the first day, we played Subside Bar in Birmingham, a typical sticky-floored, sweaty-walled 'rock bar,' which we'd played before and, since the people of Birmingham have always been kind to us, we had now chosen to return to. There are however two things preventing this otherwise excellent bar, which tends to serve as a pre-drinking ground for people heading out to one the Academies, from establishing itself as The One Venue To Rule Them All, which I admit had completely slipped my mind until our arrival: firstly, it does not have a sound man. Secondly it does not, in the strictest sense, have a working PA. Fortunately however we are resourceful characters and despite having initially admitted defeat, we had a little sit down and some fresh air, and were able to botch something together. It was like a sudoku made of wire.

Anyway, the whole thing wound up sounding like a very loud band practice, which just about worked in a DIY sort of way. The other bands on the bill, Conduit and Pray For Divinity (both well worth having a listen to by the way) were really friendly and welcoming and the bar staff, while a little aloof, were kind enough to overlook the fact that I almost completely destroyed an arm of a sofa by jumping off it halfway through the last song. We also met Nick from Brave Or Invincible Records and I Shot The Pilot, a long time friend of Dave's and, more recently, someone we like to flirt with on twitter. It was good to finally put a face to a tweet. Or something.

After the show and a quick trip to ASDA, we retired to the nearest floor and slept.

Joe
awl.a

The "You Say 'Potato', We Say 'Potay-'" Tour

Friends!

Come bear witness as 5 grown men, unshowered but defiant, challenge Mother Nature herself; risking life, limb and hearing to survive on only 3 minutes sleep a night, nourished only by sandwiches from service stations and the brief smattering of applause that follows their nightly post-hardcore cacophany.

Restrained neither by fear nor hangovers, they plunge headlong into the mighty seas of the British Transportation Network, the scent of tarmac in their nostrils, the click-clack of metronomes in their ears, and hope in their hearts.

They search only for freedom.

And, perhaps, the megalolz.

Here is A Link To The Facebook Event and a poster:

We'd like to invite you to attend whichever date looks most convenient.
Thank you, we'll see you there.

Joe
awl.a

2010: Bring On Thursday Curry Club

So we’ve looked back, I think it’s only right if we look forward as well. We’ve mentioned good shows and bad shows, friendly people and not so friendly, and how we visited every single Wetherspoons we possibly could. Standard.

In 2010 we will probably be doing a lot more of this, but hopefully with a lot more emphasis on the good parts. In a word like.attack there are no ideas of grandeur though, sure we’d like to share a stage with Michael Buble, who wouldn’t? But we know that a lot of hard work will come before we can stand next to the Canadian crooner and hold our heads high. Well, that or play in a town where at least 3 kids know who we are, either/or.

In February we have our second proper tour booked, where we’ll be playing in places where we’ve been before, and a couple we haven’t. It’s not a massive jaunt and we aren’t hitting the west coast of America just yet but we’re really looking forward to it and can’t wait to sleep on floors, eat overpriced service station food and play each show with a raging hangover. We endeavour to do this as much as possible wherever and whenever. Until we breakdown or run out of money, whichever comes first.

This year should also hopefully bring some brand new recordings, recordings that we’re working on at the moment and are regularly the source of many an argument and many a “Dude that sounds awesome!” It can get pretty emotional.

If you can’t wait that long though the Wise Children cover we recorded for the Ranch Production House compilation will be out late January/early February and is shaping up to be insane. The pairings are genius and the local talent on display rivals any other local scene I’ve experienced. It makes me genuinely proud to be from Southampton.

Apart from that we’ll have new merch out for February (designs are currently in the works and are looking lovely), new free stuff to throw at you guys and some sweet new onstage moves; one that includes Alex, Joe, a cage full of swans and lasers. It will put Dream Theatre to shame.

Oh and like we said, Myspace died in 2009. There are however touch screens, which are pretty cool and there are video adverts on the tube, and there's the internet, so for now we'll just have to content ourselves with them.

So to summarise, here's what happened for us in 2009.

Around this time last year we were finishing off our most recent EP and before long we released it, first physically, and then via iTunes and Spotify. Some people said some really nice things about it, and for that we would once again like to thank them. We also played some shows. A lot of shows in fact, more shows than we'd ever played before. Some were brilliant, and some terrible. Highlights included the February tour with Waiting For Sirens (now Towers), our EP release show at the Joiners in July with Ardentes and The Taming, a trip to the Isle of Wight in August, a show at The Skiving Scholar in Plymouth in November and a great deal more. As for the low points, there were plenty of them as well.

2009 was also the hardest year for us, and it's been an education. In many ways we've been very naive; we spent two days driving to and from Hull for one show, at which we played to the other band, the promoter, the sound man, the bar staff, and two people we persuaded to come in off the street to see us play 15 minutes before we went on. In some way maybe that is the kind of gig that a band needs to play, it's a recognised and important rite of passage, but my goodness it was expensive, and more than a little disheartening. The promoter paid us, even though no one came, and we'll always be grateful to him for that. In retrospect we were stupid for going all that way (a 570 mile round trip) for a one-off show in the first place but it really seemed to make sense at the time. "We'll play anywhere and everywhere!" we said.
We also played three hometown shows in the same week, which wasn't a great idea either but at least it was a mistake we could make on our doorstep!

It wasn't all bad. The thrill of hearing something you've actually created, both as it comes together in practice and finally as a recording is something entirely unique and exciting, although neither is without an element of profound difficulty. The tour with Waiting For Sirens in February was our first real tour. It was only short, about a week across the south coast, but travelling between cities, wandering around looking for the nearest Wetherspoons, playing to people who had never heard of us, (most of whom now probably only regard us as a distant and hazy memory) was a fantastic opportunity and a truly enjoyable experience. One of many we've had throughout the year.

Finally, I'd like to say thank you. To everyone who's been kind enough to do anything for us, for putting us on a show, for letting us sleep on your floor, for buying a CD, or a T-Shirt, for taking a flyer, for listening to us, for writing about us, for including us on a compilation, for emailing us, for replying, for coming with us, for driving, for looking after the merch while we played, for filming, for taking photos, for singing along, for getting our name right, for adding all the extra punctuation, for lending us kit, and everything else. We really really appreciate it. Thank you for a good year.

Joe
awl.a

In 2009 MySpace finally died, please join our mailing list.

Collective Gays For Blakfish

Good evening dotAttackers,

Just a quick note about the weekends events, what the future holds and all that sort of fun.

Friday night we played Plymouth alongside Gay for Johnny Depp, Outcry Collective, Blakfish and The Deering. An enjoyable night was had by all, drinks were consumed, merriment ensued and eventually at around 6am we all passed out. After waking up on the kitchen floor and realising I had work that evening between shows (petrol don't come for free!) we decided it was a great time to head back to sunny Southampton.

Sunday night we rocked our little socks off at the Talking Heads, amidst the same collection of bands. Sunday night shows are a strange breed, but I think we coped against the odds to be noisy in a tuneful-ish way that a few people definitely nodded their heads to.

After those two shows we are now down to the last 15 copies of our E.P so get in quick if you want a copy. Alternatively you can buy them cheaper on iTunes - although you won't get the nice artwork.

In fact as of tonight you will actually be able to listen to the whole of "..Birds..." for free on our myspace - so that's exciting news as well. You can stream it on Spotify as well if you please.

In other news we have begun booking dates for our tour in February next year - who knows we may even have a van by then! Come talk to us at a venue near you, we're very approachable... especialy if you have gifts! Bring Joe a snickers duo to our next show and get a free copy our E.P! So far the confirmed dates are as follows.

Feb 15th - Subside bar, Birmingham
Feb 16th - Hope & Anchor, London
Feb 17th - Bakers Vault, Stockport
Feb 18th - Ringside, Hull

I'm looking forward to seeing what other far flung places we can play, if anyone wants us to come to their town, give us a shout and we'll do our best to get there. Thank you to each of you for entering. It's been an exciting week, and now it's time to reveal all!

The question everyone has been asking: "Who the hell is headlining the Southampton date of the Triple Threat Tour at Talking Heads on 15th November?"
The answer? "Only bloody Gay For Johnny Depp!"

The winner, plucked out of a hat from Topman that was very much in vogue only two, maybe three years ago, is ROO PESCOD, CORNWALL.
The prize is two tickets to the show and a copy of our most recent EP, "Though We Aren't Birds, We're Still Given To Flight."

Congratulations, you young devil.

Thanks again to everyone else who entered, we hope you don't feel so spurned that you won't still attend. As I've said before, and will continue to say over and over again, the line-up is brilliant, the venue is pretty swell, and the drinks are fairly cheap.
They even have Hoegaarden.
Fancy.

For more information about the gig, I point you in the direction of the FACEBOOK EVENT.
We're still selling tickets from our Merch Store, they can be found HERE at a very special advanced price. In light of all the postal strikes we've had recently (will I ever get my copy of this month's Rocksound?), rather than offering free delivery, you can now collect your purchased tickets at the venue when you arrive on the night instead. They'll be in envelopes, with your name on.
Again, fancy?
You knows it.

We'll see you then.

Joe
awl.a

Competition! Win tickets to Talking Heads on 15th November!

Hello, I'm here to talk to you about the competiton we're running this week. Here we go:

As you may or may not have heard, we're playing the Southampton date of the Triple Threat Tour (Gay For Johhny Depp, Blakfish and Outcry Collective) on Sunday the 15th of November. This is a pretty big show for us, we're the only local support, and as you can imagine we're pretty excited to be playing as part of such an excellent line-up. We even made our own poster. Can you believe that? As Ian MacKaye once famously said, "DIY til we die, or find someone willing to do it for us."
We're so excited in fact, that we've decided to run a little competiton, so we're giving away a pair of tickets to the show and a copy of our most recent EP and all you have to do to enter is answer this simple question:

WHO IS HEADLINING THE SOUTHAMPTON DATE OF THE TRIPLE THREAT TOUR AT TALKING HEADS ON 15th NOV?

A. A WORD LIKE.ATTACK
B. OUTCRY COLLECTIVE
C. BLAKFISH
D. GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP

ANSWERS VIA EMAIL TO AWORDLIKEATTACK@HOTMAIL.CO.UK WITH "COMPETITION ANSWER IS..." ALONG WITH YOUR ANSWER IN THE SUBJECT

The competition closes at midnight on Sunday 8th November. The winner will be picked out of a hat and announced on Monday the 9th.

If you want to know anything more about the gig, there is of course a Facebook Event, as there is for all things, which you can find Here, and that contains all manner of information from times and line-up to what we'll possibly be wearing.

And if you don't manage to win yourself a pair next Monday or don't fancy your chances in the competition don't forget you can get tickets from Our Merch Store with free delivery. As I said we are the only local band on the bill and we really appreciate your support.

For those of you who aren't in Southampton but can make it to Plymouth, we're also playing the Plymouth date of the Triple Threat Tour at White Rabbit with The Avalon on Friday 13th November, and that's FREE ENTRY. (Although if you win the competition, so is the Southampton one...) Again, Facebook Event, for all your needs and conerns.

What's more, to celebrate the fact that "Though We Aren't Birds, We're Still Given To Flight" is now up on Spotify, we thought we'd almost completely undermine thist great achievement by uploading another song onto our MySpace tomorrow. It's the second track from the EP, entitled "Move The Still Life" and we'll probably be uploading the third song in a couple of weeks as well.

Finally don't forget to check us out on the various social networking sites you can see listed on the right, so you can keep track of us as we MyFace and TweetBook our way towards fulfilling our dream of being just like that chump on the T-Mobile advert. Or if you'd rather not have updates watered down by photos of people's hair from confusing angles and adverts for Emergency Kits (what demographic I fell into for that one I have no idea) then there's always the Mailing List.

Thanks for reading, and good luck.

Joe
awl.a

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://abloglikeattack.blogspot.com/2009/11/competition-win-tickets-to-talking.html' title='Competition! Although to be honest that's probably the aim of most band-based blogs. Lets stick to that formula.

In the past two weeks we've probably played our worst show ever (which prompted some long overdue hardware change-ups) and our best show ever. The latter being a much needed confidence boost because if I'm honest, bad shows haunt me. Even if it was nothing I could of helped, I still feel personally responsible for giving out a less than perfect impression of our band, something which is not fun for anybody. Luckily though our show in Plymouth a week later rectified that and left us feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Thanks Plymouth.

Something else that's been keeping us busy as of late is a cover we've been working on and recording for a compilation due to be released by The Ranch Production House. The complete details of this compilation are yet to be disclosed however the basic idea is local bands covering other local bands, something that is pretty exciting if you know how much talent there is in the Hampshire area at the moment. We were lucky enough to be given the delicate folk of Wise Children to make our own, and even though we've enjoyed it immensely I'm not going to lie and say it was easy. The recording's nearly done and we're really excited for everyone to hear it when it's out in January (studio blog to follow soon!)

Oh and it's for charity too so buy it yeah? You cheap bastards.

As for the future we've got some shows in the next couple of months that we're stupidly excited about. Like our first visit to Portsmouth with our friends in Not Advised (our first show with them in about 3 years!) and being lucky enough to blag our way onto the Plymouth AND Southampton dates of the Triple Threat Tour featuring Blakfish, Outcry Collective and Gay For Johnnny Depp. Good times my friends, good times.

For all the details on our upcoming shows, up-to-date news and probably even the finer workings of our bowel movements, check out all the links down the right-hand side of this page. Especially our new .COM. ('Cos we like to have you all to ourselves and we don't want to share you with Myspace, got it?)

And if you were wondering what I'm doing right now, I've just uploaded some live footage from shows we've done over the past few months around the country. Head over to Youtube to bask in their sketchily filmed brilliance.

Adam.Attack

Thought We Aren't Birds, We're Still Given To Flight - Lyrics

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I began to read Neil Gaiman's Sandman comic series to pass the time on these menial journeys... at least it started that way. I soon realised that I was starting to look forward to this alone time, I was able to lock myself in a world without work or distractions. I became hugely inspired by the characters "The Endless" who are personifications of Death, Dream, Desire, Destiny, Delirium etc.

I began thinking what life would be like if all emotions were real people that could influence your day to day decisions, if Fear, Faith, Pride, Lust etc were human beings who could bully you into doing their bidding. With these three songs I tried to create a world in which this was the case. The idea was that essentially they would be around us all the time pulling us in one direction or another with their actions, constantly battling with each other for our attention.

I will be posting the lyrics on our blog shortly for anyone who is interested in perusing the exact lyrical content of the new record. Until then, we would hugely appreciate it if you downloaded our tracks from iTunes tomorrow, close your eyes and hopefully find yourself escaping to this world in the same way I did on the train.

Thanks for your time

Dave.Attack

Previously on ‘a word like.attack’

Once there were 5 individuals.

Two of them played the guitar and one played the drums and one of them played the bass guitar and one of them could sing and some of the others could also sing but not quite as well and one of them owned a drum machine and a computer and a keyboard and had a lot of free time and all of them wanted to make music so they formed a band and wrote some songs and recorded their first EP and played some gigs and then they recorded another EP and played more gigs and in different places and sometimes with bands that other people had actually heard of but then one of them who could play the drums left and went to university and the others found another individual who could also play the drums and he played them exceedingly well and to a click and many a man-crush was formed that day I can tell you and so these five individuals (four of the original individuals and the new individual who could play the drums exceedingly well and to a click) set about writing some more songs and these songs were good not that the songs that preceded them had not been good but these songs were better and so they recorded them and released them as a three track EP entitled “Though We Aren’t Birds, We’re Still Given To Flight” on 20th July 2009.

Since then these 5 individuals have continued to play many shows and hope to continue to do so for as long as the people will put up with them and have appeared on the Punktastic Un-Scene 5 Compilation and the AlterThePress.com Autumn/Winter Compilation and have received some very kind reviews from places like RockMidgets.com and Audioscribbler.com and today they set up their own website and blog.
